How can I make my noisy struts quieter?
Take the wheel off, and spray WD-40, or silicone, or engine or transmission oil, lubricant generously at the top (and bottom) of the strut coils. Strut bearing is at the very top of the strut coil and may need extra spray for the lubricant to penetrate through the thin opening of the rubber seal. Do it on both ends.
Why does my new suspension make noise?
If your suspension is making a squeaking or creaking noise when you go around corners, then this could point towards worn ball joints. Worn out ball joints can also impact on handling. If your car is drifting to one side or the steering feels looser than normal, this is possibly caused by damaged ball joints.
Why do my struts make noise?
Internal shock or strut noise is uncommon. The most common cause for clunking noises over bumps is the mounts or attaching parts. Replacing strut mounts is always recommended when replacing the struts. The insulating material density changes over time and the mount pivot bearings wear.
Do quick struts settle?
Springs can settle but if designed correctly settling would be quite small. If the mfgr of the aftermarket springs designed them to the max of the spring wire’s yield strength they will settle.
Will a bad strut make a popping noise?
Noise while driving: A knocking or thumping noise — especially over bumps — can indicate worn struts. Bad front strut bearings may also cause a popping noise or a binding feeling when the steering wheel is turned.
How much do new struts settle?
it’s the brand new springs they settle in the next few weeks. it will drop maybe 1/2-1 inch.
What makes car struts make noise?
The struts are solid units that allow the chassis, wheel assembly and body to move cohesively when a bump is hit while driving. When the strut begins to wear out, it will produce a knocking or clunking sound that can be very noticeable. The strut is filled with an inner shock, bushings, and supporting components that eventually wear out over time.
Do my struts or shocks need replacement?
A strut or a shock absorber doesn’t need to be replaced unless there is a problem with it or if you just want to upgrade your ride with new shock absorbers. The most common problem with shocks and struts is when they start leaking. See this photo: leaking rear shock absorber.
What are the symptoms of a bad strut mount?
Signs of bad struts would include excessive bounce and/or tire cupping across the entire width of the tread. Banging or rattling is also a sign of excessively worn struts but also can indicate bad strut mounts.
Are new strut mounts needed when replacing struts?
Replacing strut mounts is always recommended when replacing the struts. The insulating material density changes over time and the mount pivot bearings wear. Other suspension and steering components often cause noises that the shocks/struts get blamed for: Ball joints, sway bar bushings & links are common causes.
