Is a car drivable without a timing belt?

Is a car drivable without a timing belt?

For starters, your car won’t run without a timing belt. Your timing belt rotates your car’s engine’s cam and crankshaft. This allows each cylinder to fire at the right time. If this timing is off, the engine will not run smoothly if it is even able to run at all.

What happens if you drive without a timing belt?

The most common thing that’s going to happen if your timing belt fails while you’re driving is that the valves are going to get bent. There’s also potential for a cylinder head and camshaft damage as well, and you could end up the damage to the cylinder walls, the Pistons, and more.

When to change the timing belt on a Land Cruiser?

I picked up the Land Cruiser and checked under the hood. The timing belt was done at 90K miles like it should have been, 6 years ago. SO, It is going to need replaced again soon (and I will do the water pump, pulleys, etc…). I will wait till I hit 190-200K before I do it. Thanks for all the input.

How can I tell if I need to change my timing belt?

Yep, look for the sticker under the hood, it will tell you the date and mileage that it was changed…if it was changed by a Toyota tech, even a non dealer one. If that belt lets loose then you will be wishing you had changed it. Should be a sticker, but judging by all the other things done, don’t see why it wouldn’t have been completed.

Can you reset the light on a Land Cruiser?

Generally you can’t reset the light other than at 60k. What miles has it got on there. If it’s close to say 120 then I’d wait and see if the light comes on.

Can a non interference engine change the timing belt?

For a non interference engine the answer is no. Valves stuck wide open will not be hit by the pistons. If the timing belt breaks on a non interference engine, you will have a dead engine but all it will take to fix it is a new timing belt, properly installed.
