What kind of throttle does a Toyota 22RE use?

I have recently bought a 1985 Toyota Hilux 22RE to build a rock crawler. The bed has been bobbed 1 foot. The engine surges badly when 1/4 or more throttle is applied. It runs well if the Throttle Position Sensor is disconnected. I tested the TPS with an ohm meter at the TPS itself, as well as at the CPU connection, and it looks OK.

What should the idle speed be on a 22RE?

We also recommend going a hair tighter than the factory says too. .007” on the intake and .011” on the exhaust side. If it’s your first time adjusting valves, TAKE YOUR TIME AND TRIPLE CHECK YOUR WORK. It’s not rocket surgery, but if it’s not done correctly, things can get ugly quick. Rough idle? Engine shakes at idle? Low idle?

What should I look for in a 22RE engine?

I get dozens of calls every day with people trying to diagnose various issues with their 22R / 22RE / 22RTE engines. Everything from hard start issues, rough idle, mis-fire, lack of power….blah, blah, blah. Since there are a few hundred things it CAN be, I recommend starting with the basic stuff first.

What causes a truck to stall at idle RPMs?

If you like, we can try to do a few tests to isolate the cause of the problem. Your truck uses a device called an IAC valve to control idle speed. Base idle is determined by the amount of air that gets around the closed throttle plates. The computer opens the iac valve to admit more air as necessary to raise the engine rpm.

Why are Toyota 22R engines so bulletproof?

We all can agree that the 22R family of engines are bulletproof when maintained. One of the reasons why is that Toyota spent the time to engineer it with parts that actually last. We’ve seen most every version of the aftermarket parts available and 99% of the time, the OE part is still (by far) the best available.
