The stock 22R head can be used with 22RE intake (if it’s an ’85 and later head), so there’s no need to get an EFI head unless the head you’re using is an early 22R head, in which case you’ll need to drill and tap three new holes or use the donor EFI head.

22r and 22re are the same blocks. ’85 and up have a “lazer block” which has a slightly shorter deck height. The older blocks are taller so if you mis-match blocks and heads the accessory brackets will not line up just right but they will work. The heads off a 22r will NOT work on a 22RE intake.

Somebody more of an expert can aswer this better, but the short answer is no, they are not interchangeable. (at least not easily). The 22R head does not have quite the same mounting surface/bolt pattern for the intake manifold. I believe there is a valve clearance issue too… Anyone else want to field this better?

Can a 22R vacuum be changed to a 22RE?

Can a fuel pump be replaced in a 22R?

See Part# 1035042. For this option you will of course have to drop the tank and remove the stock RE pump and then install the mechanical pump that is very reliable and you no longer have to worry about dropping the tank ever again to replace a fuel pump which is a plus.
