What does cam timing do?
Advancing the cam timing moves the valve opening and closing events earlier in the cycle. Since the relationship between the intake and exhaust lobes cannot be changed, advancing or retarding a cam affects both the intake and exhaust valve equally.
How do you set a cam timing?
On single cylinder engines the piston must be set at TDC. The “T” mark on the flywheel aligned with the mark on the crankcase. Then the camshaft is installed with the Cam lobes pointed down and the camchain is looped over the cam sprocket. Now the camchain is moved on the sprocket till the timing marks are set.
What is exhaust cam timing?
One of the least understood topics and regarding engine tuning and building continues to be the concept of cam timing and “lobe centers”. The opening and closing process of an inlet or exhaust valve as controlled by a cam lobe constitutes a complete “event” in the cycle of the engine.
How does cam timing affect ignition timing?
Cam timing changes DO effect ignition timing in that if you advance the cam 4 degrees in relation to the crank, the ignition timing will be advanced by the same amount. The distributor is driven off of the cam. The ignition timing should then be adjusted the spec you want. The initial and total timing numbers are all that change.
What happens when you advance camshaft timing?
Not to be confused with ignition timing advance, advancing a camshaft will change the timing of the valve events in relation to where the crankshaft is positioned. Advancing ignition timing causes the spark plug to fire earlier whereas an advanced camshaft will cause the intake and/or exhaust valves to open and close earlier in the engine cycle.
What is the difference between a cam and a crankshaft?
Camshaft. The camshaft sensor monitors the frequency at which the camshaft is turning.
What does a cam do in an engine?
A cam engine is a reciprocating engine where, instead of the conventional crankshaft, the pistons deliver their force to a cam that is then caused to rotate. The output work of the engine is driven by this cam.
