Why Some rooms are hotter than others?
If some rooms are warmer or colder than others, this is usually just a matter of balancing. Meaning adjusting the airflow to each room so they all even out. If a room is heating or cooling much quicker than other rooms, the airflow can be reduced to that room to even things out, also sending more air to other areas.
How do you get hot air from upstairs to downstairs?
Use negative ventilation to move heated air out of the downstairs and vent it outside. Mount window fans to circulate air out of the house from the downstairs. Open upstairs windows to facilitate the air circulation, and the negative ventilation achieved downstairs will literally pull the upstairs air downward.
Does closing vents help cool other rooms?
Closing air vents in one area of the home does not help other rooms receive better airflow. Instead, conditioned air is lost through duct leaks and the other areas of your home do not receive additional heating or cooling. Cold rooms in a warm house act like a heat sink.

Where does the coolant go in a BMW 5 series heater?
Hot coolant flows from the engine crankcase to the valve. It then flows through the valve out the back to the heater core (yellow arrow). A quick check would be to confirm hot coolant is entering the valve at the front hose (red arrow) and into the heater core through the rear hose (yellow arrow).
