How do you find a bad ground on a trailer?
There are several places to look for a poor ground connection. Lets start with the trailer connector on the vehicle. Trace the white wire coming off of the connector, and make sure it is securely grounded to the vehicle frame or chassis. Check that this connection is securely made to clean metal.
What to do if your tail light has come loose?
Open the trunk and take a look. You can see where the wires should connect in order for the electrical system to properly work. If a wire has come loose, reattach it. On most new cars, the wiring harness is located behind panels in the trunk and is not accessible without removing the panels. Check the taillight bulbs.
Why are my lights not grounded in my trailer?
It sounds like you have an insufficient ground. It is enough to run the signals individually, but when you fire up the running lights, there is not a good enough ground. Check the ground wire at the trailer connector. Make sure each light is properly grounded. Some are stud grounded on the mounting hardware, others have ground wires.
Can a bad ground wire cause brake lights to not work?
A bad brake light ground connection will result in the brake lights not working, or power crossfeeding through the tail-light circuit, preventing both tail and brake lights froms working at the same time. Repairing the connection is a project that is well within the range of the do-it-yourselfer.
Where is the ground connection for the brake and tail lights?

This will require you to remove the trim panels in some car trunks, which you can in some cases accomplish with a Phillips-head screwdriver or a small socket.
