No, it doesn’t have to be on the steering wheel. On modern cars with airbags no way you’re using the factory wheel, and the racing wheel horns can be a bit hokey. We also wired foot switch for co-driver, separate switch for driver.

There is probably a wiring harness that is loose, probably in the steering wheel itself. Took it into the dealer today, paid $125 for a diagnostic and $125 for a “fix”.
Why are the buttons on my steering wheel not working?
Most of the buttons on my steering wheel have stopped working. the raidio controls on the back of the steering wheel, volume, station, etc. don’t work. The button on the front left side that control the info (step, reset) don’t seem to work either. my cruise buttons still work.

I noticed at night, the lights on both sides of the controls were going on and off as I turned the wheel. Thought I was going crazy. Horn, radio controls on both sides, instrument cluster buttons, heated steering wheel and voice control don’t work. Oddly enough the cruise controls still work.
