Is there issue with rear lift gate on Subaru Outback?

Is there a power hatch on a Subaru Outback?
Power windows/locks are pretty solid these days, the motors and mechanisms have been engineered and tested extensively, to a pretty high number of cycles, before failure. The hatch mechanisms, not-so-much. I’d actually choose a “no power hatch” option, if there were such a thing, without hesitancy.
What to do if power rear gate fails?
Check that the power rear gate operates correctly. If the above fails then I would try disconnecting the battery. “If the power rear gate detects some abnormality while operating, an electronic chirp wil sound and the power rear gate operation will be automatically stopped.
Can a dead battery open the rear lift gate?
I understand that Honda/Acura still uses that design; wish Subaru would. The Acura does have multiple sensors hidden in the weather seal. Completely dead battery can still open the rear hatch to get out the jumper cables. Not sure what happens with the powered lift gate in a dead battery condition and you can’t get to the inside release.
How do I reset the rear lift gate?
Owner’s manual page 157 says that if the rear liftgate is closed, the reset procedure is: Keep pressing the rear gate opener button until it is unlocked (I assume this means on the tailgate and not the remote) Lift up the rear gate Pull down the rear gate until it starts to close automatically.
Why is the rear lift gate not latching?
But now it won’t latch (the car dash shows the rear lift gate is open) and none of the three buttons to operate the door will work (the key fob, the button on the door itself, and the button on the dash). I’ve tried holding various buttons down with no result.
