When does a Subaru Outback make a louder click?
It will be louder when there is more torque. So when the engine is cold and revs higher at start it will make a definite click when you put it in gear. Once it warms up it is less noticeable or not at all but I can make it louder by giving it a little rev before putting it in gear. Have done that to test and reproduce it.
Why does my Subaru Outback make a metal sound?
I own a 2016 Subaru Outback. My car could be sitting in the garage on level ground without the parking brake applied. When you shift from park into reverse, immediately after the car is in the reverse gear it makes a metal sound as if there is metal hitting metal.
Why does my Subaru make a clicking noise when I Park?
Both of you have the same part making this sound. Its called a parking pawl. Its a tooth which slips into a gear in the front differential. Its design is to prevent unintentional rolling when the car is put into park.

When do I shift from Park to reverse, I hear a metal click?
When I shift from Park to Reverse or from Drive to Reverse, I hear a metal on metal click that’s loud enough to be unsettling. It does not happen when shifting from Reverse to Drive or from Drive to Park. Any ideas? Thanks! you mean a “one time” click, just one? in the cabin or more under the car/external?
