What does the at signal mean on a Subaru Outback?
They indicate that there’s a ground, or a malfunction in the relevant switch circuit to the ECM. In the AT, normally, when the gear shift lever and the Inhibitor Switch are in P or N, the Switch connects the starter relay to the starter solenoid. (See attached diag.)
What is diagnostic code for Subaru Outback automatic transmission?
The diagnostic code is P0851 – Neutral swith input circuit, low voltage. One of the listed probable causes is a failed neutral switch, so I thought I would start there. The Haynes repair manual references the the NSS for the manual transmission, but not the automatic.
Where is the neutral switch on a car?
A neutral safety switch works just like a clutch switch except that it keeps an automatic transmission from starting in gear. The neutral safety switch will allow the engine to start with the transmission selector in park and neutral. The switch is located in two places on the vehicle.

What to do when your Subaru switch is in neutral?
If you do not, you could try unplugging the switch, attach an analog ohm meter and watch the needle for fluctuations while gently moving the shifter in gear. There should be continuity when in gear, NO FLUCTUATIONS WHILE MOVING THE SHIFTER IN GEAR, and open in neutral.
Why is my neutral safety swtich not working?
P0705 is a malfunction detected when the A/T control unit does not receive the correct voltage signal from the switch based on the gear position. It comes down to either the harness connector or the inhibitor switch itself. Any attempt to repair automotive parts and/or systems carries risk of personal injury.
