Where are the spark plugs on a Mazda Miata?
The spark plugs sit on top of the cylinders on a MX-5. Looking at the engine you can see a set of spark plug leads running down the engine with 4 rubber boots in the centre of the engine’s rocker cover. The spark plugs are set about 80mm under those rubber boots. How Does It Work? Part 1 Deliveringthe spark
Where can I get an ignition coil for my Miata?
Fortunately, we found a coil assembly from Mazmart in Atlanta for only $125. Now the car runs fine. The point is, don’t do a compression check without either pulling the connectors from the coils or keeping a spark plug in the wire while turning over the engine.
Why are the ignition wires on my Miata not working?
Common Problem! The factory ignition wires on the Miata only seem to last between 30,000 and 50,000 miles. If you are experiencing misfiring and hesitation and you haven’t changed your wires, this is most likely the cause. Change the wires! In case you forget which plugs is which, refer to the firing order diagram below.
What do you use to grease the plugs on a Miata?
Apply Silicon Grease to inside of bottom seals of plug wires (i.e. inner surface of plug wire which mates to the ceramic insulators on the plugs)

What’s the torque of a Mazda MX 5 spark plug?
The 14mm thread diameter and alloy head mean the spark plug torque is 18.0~21.6 lb-ft for your MX-5. Make sure the engine is cool before removing of replacing the spark plugs. If you are using thread lubricant then the torque can be reduced by one third.
What happens when spark plugs are under torque?
“Torque directly affects the spark plugs’ ability to transfer heat out of the combustion chamber. A spark plug that is under-torqued will not be fully seated on the cylinder head, hence heat transfer will be slowed. This will tend to elevate combustion chamber temperatures to unsafe levels, and pre-ignition and detonation will usually follow.
What’s the gap between spark plugs and engine block?
The 11 in the NKG part number signifies 1.1mm gap. A small amount of molybdenum based thread lubricant on the first few threads of the plug is recommended. The gasket between the spark plug and the engine block is crushable. Spark plugs should not be overly tightened. They need to be torqued to the correct tension.
