Ive done 5000 miles in my 5 month old 1.8 saloon and have no such stutter problems. I used both 95 octane petrol and now 99 octance E5. no hiccups, but smoother with E5 and sounds better at high rev. Sorry for your problems but you definetely have something wrong there, get it checked out for sure. Its not an “engine characteristic” in my car.

Why is my Honda Civic having Idle problems?

Continue reading to find out what can cause your Civic to have idling problems. A car with a vacuum leak can cause an unstable idle. An unplugged vacuum line (as well as a damaged air intake hose) creates discrepancy between how much air the engine’s computer thinks it has, and how much it actually has.

How can I tell if my Honda Civic has a vacuum leak?

The easy way to find out if there is a vacuum leak is to spray the hoses with starter fluid or brake cleaner. Make sure this is done on a cool engine. If any of the hoses are cracked or not sealed correctly, they’ll suck in the vapor and the car’s idle will change. This should help you find the general location of a leak.

When does the VTEC go on in a Honda?

It’s active when the engine is operating relatively high in the rev range, and you rarely get there in normal driving conditions, especially if your car has an automatic transmission. But, if you’re the shift-your-own-gears type and you like twisty roads, VTEC makes a noticeable difference.

How does the VTEC system in a car work?

For a combustion engine to work, it requires four things: Air, fuel, compression, and spark. For the purposes of understanding the VTEC system, we’ll focus here mainly on the air part of that equation. A part of the engine known as the camshaft controls how much the valves open and then close, and therefore how much air goes into the engine.

How does the Honda VTEC engine system work?

The process of opening and closing the valves that we just described works well at low revolutions per minute (rpm), but the valves open and close so quickly as the engine builds up speed that performance ultimately starts suffering. Honda’s Australian division published the video below to explain how its VTEC technology works.

Which is the earliest implementation of VTEC-E?

The earliest VTEC-E implementation is a variation of SOHC VTEC which is used to increase combustion efficiency at low RPM while maintaining the mid range performance of non-vtec engines.
