What should the oil pressure be on a 944?
The 944’s oil pressure should run 4-5 bar at idle when the engine is cold. It will gradually decrease to 2-3 bar at idle as the engine oil warms to normal operating temperature. Once the oil is at normal operating temperature, the oil pressure should indicate around 4 bar at 5,000 rpm.
Where is the oil pump on a Porsche 944?
The oil pump is not mounted but if it were, it would suck the oil from the passageway and insert it under pressure into the hole in the front of the block where the red wire disappears into. The green wires are stuck into the oil passageways for the crankshaft main bearings.
How many crankshaft bearings are in a Porsche 944?
There are 5 crankshaft bearings on a 944, a very robust design. Note that each bearing has a passageway drilled from the bearing back to the oil gallery. These are shown by the green wires in the photo. If you could see the other end of the green wires, you would see them sticking into the oil gallery, at a right angle.
Is there a fluid leak in my 944?
Since purchasing my 944 I’d always been aware of a slight fluid leak, but since none of the fluids (engine oil, power steering, water, brake fluid) seemed to be disappearing at any great rate and there were other more pressing issues I decided to put investigating it on the back burner.
How does the oil turn on a Porsche 944?
But in words, we see that the oil to the 1st rod bearing has no 90 degree turns and two 45 degree turns. The oil to the #2 rod bearing has a 90 degree turn to get out of the oil gallery and then two 45 degree turns. The same is true for the #3 and #4 bearings.
What kind of oil to use on a 944?
I have an ’87 944 that I do not have the owners manual for. Can anyone tell me what the manual says for recommended oil weight, type, and quantity. Someone recommended that I use 6.3 Quarts of 20w-50 Castrol or 15w-50 Mobil 1 and I chose to try 20w-50 Castrol synthetic blend because it’s cheaper then Mobil 1.
Which is better Castrol or Mobil Oil 944?
Higher oil pressure is better from my experience with my 944. It is not like the 911 that makes 1.0 bar per 1,000 RPMS… totally different oiling system. Yes, Castrol is a little cheaper, but I have tried most of the stuff out there and Mobil 1 is the only one that keeps full oil pressure even after running extremely hard. Your car seems normal.
