The words idle, problem, Porsche and 944 seem to appear more times together on any forum than any other niggle to do with the car. The reason they appear so frequently is that there are a number of situations and/or combination of situations that can cause the idle speed of your 944 to behave erratically as the following clip of my own car shows.
Why does my car engine run rough while idling?

Why does my car run bad in WOT?
If the car still runs badly at WOT and you’ve confirmed the WOT switch is properly activating, then the problem can be narrowed down to fuel pressure, crank sensors, fuel injectors, or ignition (or wiring to those systems… ), as o2 sensor problems, vacuum leaks, and air metering issues are irrelevant in WOT mode.

Where are the DME relays in a Porsche 944 Turbo?
There are two spare DME relays (red arrow) in the storage area of the panel. Check with the fuse and relay list and diagram located under the lid and remove the DME relay (red arrow). Gently wiggle and pull the relay out from its location in the panel. These DME relays fit snuggly.

Why does my Porsche make a clicking sound when I idle?
A correctly adjusted throttle position sensor will make a clicking sound when you just roll the throttle off the stop. Place your fingers on the throttle cam and rotate the throttle open off idle. If it does not click, it’s not adjusted properly.

When restoring my 944R, I found that both fans run at their highest speed when the fan switch reaches it temperature setpoint. A lesser known fact is that one fan will run at a much lower speed when you park a hot car and turn off the ignition. This serves to continue cooldown of the parked car.
