What is the function of cam position sensor?
The Camshaft Position Sensor detects camshaft rotation, and is mounted near the cylinder head so that the sensor is opposite to the timing rotor attached to the engine camshaft. The engine ECU detects the camshaft angle, and performs cylinder recognition based on the signals detected by the camshaft position sensor.
What does the camshaft position sensor do on a BMW?
Click here to order! The camshaft position sensor is used to synchronize fuel injection and as a feedback device for VANOS (variable camshaft timing) control (if equipped). When a camshaft sensor fails, the check engine light will illuminate and a fault code will be stored.
How can I tell if my camshaft sensor is faulty?
Check for the presence of power flowing through the circuit. Touch one of your probes to ground (any metal part on the engine) and the other probe to each one of the sensor wires. If neither wire has current, there’s a failure in the sensor’s circuit. Have your assistant crank or start the engine.
How to replace camshaft sensor on BMW E39 5 Series?
Remove the 10mm fastener (green arrow), then disconnect air flow meter electrical connector (yellow arrow). Now loosen the air flow meter clamp (red arrow) and lift the air filter housing out of the engine compartment.
Can a bad cam sensor cause only one cylinder to misfire?
Answer: If the faulty cam sensor has a bad effect on ignition timing (at least in some models), it can lead to a misfire; enough raw fuel will cause the catalytic to get red hot. Question: Would a bad camshaft sensor cause only one cylinder to misfire?

What are the symptoms of a bad camshaft sensor?
7 Symptoms of a Bad Camshaft Position Sensor (and Replacement Cost) 1 Check Engine Light Illuminates. 2 Ignition Problems. 3 Car Jerking or Surging. 4 Engine Stalling. 5 Poor Acceleration. 6 Problems Shifting. 7 Bad Fuel Mileage.

Where does the sensor connector go on a BMW?
My actuall wiring from the Sensor connector (car side) goes to DME # 39 on the shield and DME #41 on the Ground. I do not think that makes a difference since does have continuity to engine ground through DME connector.
