How often should I add coolant?
An owner’s manual might recommend changing the coolant/antifreeze after the first 60,000 miles, then every 30,000 miles. But the coolant change recommendation is wildly different from car to car, as some models of cars do not recommend it be changed for as far as 120,000+ miles.
What should I do when I need to top up my coolant?
Make sure the engine is cool — If you need to top up the coolant reservoir, make sure the engine is switched off and cool before opening the tank. Pressure in the system can cause severe burns if the coolant reservoir cap is removed when the engine is hot.
How often do you put antifreeze in coolant?
Constantly topping up coolant with antifreeze! My car is in constant need of topping up on antifreeze every week, i put about 3/4 litre in. A week goes by and its well below minimum. Noticed my car heats up quicker then usual, when opening up the bonnet, its very very dry.
Where does the coolant go when the engine cools?
Just keep your hands away, because that coolant will be very hot! Modern cars have an overflow reservoir that holds some extra coolant. The system is designed so that if any coolant pushes past the radiator cap, it goes into the reservoir. Then when the engine cools, some coolant in the reservoir goes back into the engine.
Where is the coolant in the radiator when there is no leak?
There’s a COLD/MIN label on the tank indicating the ideal antifreeze level when the engine is cold. The coolant in the radiator should be just below the filler neck. When you are losing coolant but no leak is visible, several parts could be the guilty party.

When do I need to change the coolant in my car?
If the corrosion inhibitors have deteriorated, the antifreeze coolant should be changed. The cooling system might also need flushing to remove contaminants no matter what the maintenance schedule calls for or how many miles are on the odometer.
