Do you have to drain engine oil before adding more?
No. You have to drain out all the old oil, change the oil filter and then add all new motor oil back in. Do not forget to put the drain plug back in before adding the new oil. You must do it this way or you will ruin your engine.
Can you add oil to oil thats already in?
Adding new oil to old is perfectly okay and is an accepted practice for maintaining correct oil levels between oil change services. The oil added should be the oil type recommended by your manufacturer, and that’s important. Constantly adding oil however is not a substitute for changing the engine oil.
