I have a 2001 Chevy Tahoe with the 5.3L engine. I have an odd issue with the AC and was hoping an expert can shed some light on the problem. When the truck is driving, the AC is ice cold. However, when I am idling for a couple of minutes, the AC will start to blow warmer air. Almost as if the ac is turned off and only the blower is working.

Since the AC compressor is driven by the engine, it doesn’t pump as much refrigerant when you’re at a stop or driving slowly. If the system is low on refrigerant, it will show up as AC blows warm at idle and blows colder when the engine is running at higher RPMs. Get your system refrigerant level checked.

I agree with MrShift@Edmunds, same thing happened to a friend of mine with a Honda CR-V. Hers would cool fine while driving around and then turn warm at idle. I replaced both engine cooling fans (they were not operating even when I connected them directly to battery power) and that solved the problem.

Now that the temperature is down in the mid 80’s the pressure as went back down a bit and the AC is working better at idle.
