How are steel ball bearings descaled and ground?
If the balls are steel they are then heat treated. After heat treatment they are descaled to remove any residue or by-products. The balls are then hard ground. They are ground in the same type of machine as used before, but either an abrasive is introduced into coolant or the rotating plate is replaced with a very hard fine-grain grinding wheel.
Can a wheel bearing be replaced on both sides?
You shouldn’t necessarily have the bearings on both sides replaced. Just because one fails is no reason to think the others are about to; bearings should last a long time. Replacing one is a bit expensive because of the labor involved.

Is it OK to reuse a bearing after removal?
Avoid open flames or the making of sparks during the process if at all possible. It is generally not recommended to reuse a bearing that has been removed from service, but it is recommended that the bearing be examined after removal for cause of failure. Stress over time may result in damages that cannot be seen by the naked eye.
Do you have to unwrap a new bearing before installation?
This is not cost-effective with smaller bearings. Careful handling of the replacement bearing while in storage or during the installation process is imperative. Clean, dry, ambient and vibration-free storage conditions are best. Do not unwrap the bearing until ready to install it.
