When do I need to replace the seal on my timing chain?
The seal will also need to be replaced any time the timing cover is removed for maintenance of the timing chain. Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal by loosening the holding clamp nut with an adjustable wrench in a counterclockwise direction.
Which is sealant to use on timing cover?
Gasket Maker is another clue word for the best results. All RTVs are NOT created equal. Adhesion and resistance properties widely differ. thanks guys..what i have is ; Permatex Ultra Black, maximum oil resistance RTV silicone gasket maker, hi-temp.
Is the timing chain cover aluminum or cast iron?
Yes this area is a common leak point for V engines. I believe the block is cast iron and the timing chain cover is aluminum. It is quite costly to replace the gasket in that location as the front part of the engine has to be disassembled. Unless the mechanic finds that the timing chain and gears need replacement, I would forgo replacing them IMHO.
Can a water pump be dismounted from a timing chain?
Usually the water pump does not need to be dismounted from the timing chain cover so you needn’t replace that gasket. The mechanic will have to know what he is doing as usually the oil pan gasket has to be refreshed where it mates to the timing chain cover and any seams created sealed with RTV sealant.

Can a timing chain cover be leaking coolant?
Thank you for asking about your Ford F-250 Diesel. Although rare, it is possible for a timing chain cover to be leaking coolant. The water pump is in a similar location and could also be the culprit for the coolant leak. If you have not done so already, you would want to verify the source of the leak, if possible.
