Why does my rpm shoot up when I accelerate?

Why does my jetski not go past 20 mph?
My jetski ran fine for a few hours yesterday, then suddenly lost power. Would not go past 20 mph. It revs up normally but just doesn’t seem to have much power. There is oil splatter around one of the cylinders. Any idea what is going on or what to start looking at? I don’t know very much about engines.

It doesn’t sound like clutch slipping, if that was the case the rpms would skyrocket while your speed stayed the same. It sounds to me like your vehicle is in limp mode. If that was the case it would be throwing some sort of codes for sure and I’m guessing you would have a warning light.
