Suddenly, what appeared to be whitish smoke started coming out of the 2 center vents. I quickly turned off the air conditioning, and the smoke stopped coming out. What can I use to block cigarette smoke from entering my vent?
Many are magnetic and will stick directly to the inside of the vent opening. Seal the edges of the vent cover with duct tape or adhesive-foam weather stripping (if not using a magnetic vent cover or if the magnetic cover does not sufficiently block the smoke). Compensate for the loss of the vent’s function.
What can I use to keep smoke out of my air conditioner?
Use insulation padding and painter’s tape to block vents and large gaps. Smoke may also drift in through air vents or gaps around your heating or air conditioner. You may be able to block the smoke by covering the gaps with insulation padding or painter’s tape. Tuck the padding into the gaps or lay it over a vent.

What happens when air is blocked from sewer vents?
The air should be flowing up and out of the sewer vents, but since they are blocked, it has nowhere else to escape but through the drains. Note that in some cases, you may hear gurgling in drains other than the one you’re using at the moment. For example, if you flush a toilet, you may hear gurgling in the tub.
