Sitting at a stoplight, after about 20 seconds, the idle will drop to about 200rpm, causing the whole car to shudder. It’s just like it’s about to stall. Then in like 2 seconds it’s back to 750rpm or so. No CEL lights or DTCs are thrown. Oh well.. at least it doesn’t completely stall I guess.

What should the idle RPM be for a cold engine?

Another thing to consider is that when you first start a cold engine, the computer increases the idle rpm to maybe 1200 instead of 800 for a warm engine, and enriches the fuel mixture a lot compared to a warm engine. Then in a minute or two as the coolant warms, the computer begins to drop the idle rpm and lean out the mixture.

What’s the RPM drop at idle on a Nissan?

RPM about 650 down to 500 and slightly running rough. Take foot off brake (car is chocked so won’t move) and RPM back to 650-700 and no issue. Back on brake same thing. No Vac leaks detected (took it in and had checked) seems that I can pump the brakes a bit and it comes back like something sucking the vacuum but its not.

What causes a car to stall on a cold start?

It also manages the idle under changing engine loads, like when you kick on the air conditioning, turn on the headlights, or turn up the radio. When the idle air control valve malfunctions, you may experience a rough idle or the vehicle may stall entirely. This is especially true on cold starts.
