What makes a fan blower motor not work?

There was no rust in mine. A lot of dark black brush residue, couple pieces of what appeared to be small leaves, and dirt. The fan motor parts themselves were very clean after I knocked on the concrete floor to knock the debris out. I think the lube and cleaning made the difference.
