Where can I find torque specs for flex plate?
Hey everyone! Enter your ride HERE to be a part JUNE’s Ride of the Month Challenge! Gentlemen, I did a search, but could only find torque specs for flex plate to torque converter.
What are the torque specs on a torque converter?
The stock converter to flex-plate bolts are 5/16 NF and the spec is 25 foot pounds. The bell to engine bolts are 7/16″ NC grade 5 and the recommended torque is 45 foot pounds. PaulS ,
How big is a flex plate converter nut?
The stock converter to flex-plate bolts are 5/16 NF and the spec is 25 foot pounds. The bell to engine bolts are 7/16″ NC grade 5 and the recommended torque is 45 foot pounds. I’ve never seen converter nuts that were 5/16″NF. Every one I’ve seen on a Ford were 3/8NF (You must log in or sign up to reply here.)
How big do torque converter nuts need to be?
The transmission to engine bolts need to be at least about 50 ft/lbs as these are the same size as the head bolts, but a slghtly lower grade bolt. (head bolts are 70-80 ft/lbs) Id think the converter nuts could go to about 45 ft/lbs, being a 3/8″ NF thread.
Why does flexplate crack or fail?
Because perfect alignment of the engine and transmission are not possible, the flexplate can absorb the minute misalignment. As misalignment increases, the flexplate flexes more. This continual flexing eventually causes the metal to fatigue and the flexplate cracks. Misalignment should be less than .008 of an inch and the less the better.
What is broken flex plate?
A crack and or broken flex plate can be caused by a failing torque convertor and/or worn crankshaft thrust washers that will allow the crankshaft to have to much end play. This is the back and forth movement of the crankshaft. Just replacing the flex play is only repairing the damage caused by the problem, not the cause of the problem.
Is a flywheel a flex plate?
A flexplate (or flex plate) is a metal disk that connects the output from an engine to the input of a torque converter in a car equipped with an automatic transmission. It takes the place of the flywheel found in a conventional manual transmission setup.
What is torque convertor lock up?
Lock-up torque converters contain a torque converter clutch. When the clutch engages, it allows the converter to “lock” the engine to the transmission input shaft, providing a direct 1:1 engagement between the engine and transmission.
