Does the distributor run the oil pump?
There is a drive shaft that goes between the oil pump and the distributor shaft. Cam drives the distributor and the shaft turns and drives the oil pump. Priming tool should fit right onto that driveshaft to run the pump.
Does oil pump timing matter?
Oil pump timing does not matter. As for the tensioner that is the most likely cause of a timing belt to slip. If the tensioner looses tension from being old or whatever the case, the belt will become loose then could slip and you could bend valves, damage pistons, etc.
When to replace timing chain on oil pump?
Because that plastic debris can get into the oil pump pickup and cause a loss of oil pressure and since the timing chain tensioner is operated by oil pressure, you may be replacing the timing chain again (if not more) if that happens!!! If you know it’s clean just remove the two very front bolts.
Where does the oil pump shaft align with the distributor?
The oil pump shaft will usually point towards #5 to align with the distributor on #1. Remote starter switch is always a nice thing to have in the tool box in leu of a friend.
Where to install oil pump and distributor spindle?
With a new gasket placed over the drive spindle, install the oil pump and drive spindle assembly so that the projection on the top of the drive spindle is located in the 11:25 o’clock position (between 11 and 12 o’clock). Install the distributor with the metal tip of the rotor pointing toward the No. 1 spark plug tower of the distributor cap.
How do you line up an oil pump?
The easy way is to line up #1 firing position on the engine and distributor rotor and with the distributor almost bottomed one person keeps light downward pressure on the top of the distributor while another person clicks over the engine. Distributor will drop in when the shaft aligns and will stay in time as the gear is turning with the engine.

What’s the relationship between camshaft, oil pump and distributor?
The cam shaft has gear the drives the distributor gear. Out of the distributor shaft is a rod that goes down to the oil pump. In the case of your Ford pickup, this rod is hexed shaped between the distributor shaft and the oil pump. keith July 18, 2016, 5:20pm #3 There is one gear on the camshaft that drives a gear mounted a little off vertical.
How to install an oil pump and distributor?
Install the distributor with the metal tip of the rotor pointing toward the No. 1 spark plug tower of the distributor cap. Install the splash shield and front stabilizer bar. Refill the engine with oil. Start the engine, check ignition timing and check for oil leaks.
How to install a distributor and set initial timing?
Leave a little extra room with the spark plug wires to allow freedom of movement in the distributor. For Chevys, be careful to make sure 5 and 7 are installed correctly. If the wires are accidentally switched, the engine will not be happy. Before we try to start the engine, be sure the distributor is connected to switched power.
