I had same problem on 2014 Pathfinder. By removing a contact from the battery for 15 minutes the lift gate control module reset itself and the issue was resolved. Put a 3 month aggrevation to rest! No it can only be opened manually from the inside latch. In the FSM it does not show that the power liftgate is required to be reset/initialized after disconnecting car battery. I believe I read somewhere in the FSM that the power liftgate control module is located behind a removable panel in the cargo area.

My husband changed the battery on my fx35 2012. Everything worked perfect prior to the change. The button on side of steering wheel is in the on position. If so, will it stay up on its own, or does it just fall down? Reason I ask is that I don’t think the motor is strong enough to open the door without the gas struts, so if your struts have failed (and they do fail), the motor won’t lift the door.
What to do if rear liftgate won’t open?
Take off the cover where your jack goes (3rd seat will need to be down). You will be able to see the arm that moves up and down with the motor. It should be bolted to a linkage that lifts the door. If it isn’t, then get a good bolt and hook it back up.
