Do cam bearings need to be replaced?
No, you don’t need to change cam bearings when you install a new cam. So long as the old bearings aren’t screwed up because of oil starvation or something like that. Plus, you just about have to have the motor out and torn all the way down to install the new bearings anyway.
When do you need to replace cam bearings?
In general, camshaft bearings can suffer from overloading, oil starvation, misalignment and contaminated oil. The possible failures are material fatigue, excessive wear, seizure and corrosion. If any one of these things occur, you’ll need to replace the cam bearings. Cam bearings are usually available in a range of basic bearing constructions.

How are cam bearings installed into a block?
Installation of cam bearings into the block must be done carefully to avoid shaving material from the outside diameter of the bearings. This can easily cause a buildup of excess material between the bearing and the block’s bearing bore, which will “squeeze” the bearing, resulting in oil clearance reduction at the bearing inside diameter.

Is it required to change cam bearing every Cam change?
And yes the the cam bearings are the first things to get oil from the pump. But if they are too tight or too loose it will have a major effect on oil pressure down the line to more critically loaded parts of your engine such as the main bearings. Last edited by TWR2003; 06-20-2008 at 02:12 PM .
