How much oil does IronHead take?
Winter Riding Tip: run about 1/2 to a quart low, so that the oil warms up faster. If you use your bike to go across town, or real short trips, a quart low is good. If your going to work every day and it’s between 30 and 60 miles one way a 1/2 quart is good. Warm oil does it’s job much better than cold oil.
Are IronHeads reliable?
They are rudimentry and easy to work on and a well maintained one is as reliable as anything else. This is exactly my experience. Look at my sticky “IronHead Maintenance Schedule”. The IronHeads do require a lot more maintenance than virtually any other bike you may choose.

Can a push rod be removed from an Ironhead engine?
Ironhead cam removal is easier when the four push rods are removed, although the tappets can just be loosened to remove them. Old Sportsters do not have as close tolerances as modern engines have, but cam clearance should be set to factory specs if not a tad bit looser.
What’s the minimum clearance for an Ironhead engine?
If you swap your cam cover with a new one, or change your cams, always check the clearances. The factory service manual calls for .0005″ to .002″ minimum clearance. What to use to clean threads on ironheadcycle?
Get a couple of the big swingarm bearing retainer jamb nuts, make sure the threads are good, clean them up with a thread file if need be. Get something sharp and pointy and drag it through the thread valleys on the swing arm, you’ll be sort of re-cutting the threads by hand.
Where is the oil feed on an IH?
Oil feed from the tank is on the lower rear of the oil pump (3/8“ hose fitting). Oil return to the tank is on the upper front of the oil pump (3/8” hose fitting). Vent line from the oil tank is on the rear of the cam cover (1/4“ hose 90° fitting).
Where is the oil filler hole on an IH?
Oil filler hole is on the rear side of the tank. Triangle shaped side, has threaded 90° fittings on the left front side for 1/4“ oil sight tube. Oil spout is on the top of the tank beside the 90° fitting for the 1/4” vent hose. “AMF” transfer decal on the left side. Drain plug (704) on (L) bottom of tank. Triangle shaped side.
