Why does my Shovelhead starter go so slow?
Also, when it does work it turns over really slowly like the battery is flat, but I had a car battery and jumper leads straight to the solenoid and it still went slow? The car battery is on charge now but thought if it was a battery problem a car battery would turn it over easily. Any tips? Cheers guys.
What are the problems with a 1981 Shovelhead?
Shovelhead starting problems. I have owned a 1981 shovelhead FLH since it was new. When starting it yesterday, I had to push the starter button 5 times before it turned over. The battery is new, the starter button connected because of a strong clicking from the lower left side just above the trans.
What should I do if my SHOVELHEAD is not starting?
Use new gaskets for re-assembly. REMOVE the battery so the chains and sprockets do not remove your fingers. Wondering if i should replace the starter relay while I have this all apart.
Why does my Harley shovel engine keep spinning?
I have a 1981 Harley Shovel (1340) that has been sitting for a few years so my old man picked it up cheap. The starter motor turns the engine over, but only sometimes, sometimes it just sounds like its spinning, I pulled the primary cover off and everything seems okay, but what would be causing it?
Why does my Shovelhead bike not start up?
On the older Shovelhead bikes (1984 and earlier) there was a small short black wire that ran from the starter relay to the transmission for the ground. This wire must be intact or the relay would not work due to lack of a ground. When you turn the switch on, one of the wires to the starter relay should become “hot”.
What should I do if my motorcycle won’t start?
If it won’t start on 3 – 4 kicks vary the choke (maybe half way to full open) and hold the throttle wide open as if to start it like it is flooded. If you flooded it excessively you may have to pop your air cleaner cover off, too. Sounds like you carb is on the way out. New Knuckleheads? Thank, you, Jesus!!
When does a panhead start on a bike?
During our 38-year companionship my Panhead has always been tricky to start when hot or half warm/cold. It was the same when it was a rundown expolice bike, as after a first-time backyard motor rebuilt, and 16 years ago after serious blueprinting.
