Why is my Crane hi-4 not working properly?
Sounds almost like the spark advance curve is going flat and since it pops under WOT the spark timing may be getting scattered. Aren’t the Crane ignition systems photo cell triggered?
How old is the crane hi-4 ignition unit?
The unit is secure in the nose cone, but it is about five years old. Riding in that cone it gets pretty hot and maybe that will shorten its life. All the wiring looks good too. May contact Crane tech for some info. Thanks for the thoughts.
How do you install a Hi 4 on a motorcycle?
Rotate the HI-4 about 90 degrees to give better access to the cable exit hole in the gear case cover. On some early models and Sportsters, it will be necessary to enlarge this hole. Install the HI-4 first, then push the cable through the hole. Align the V notch on the HI-4 same as the OE plate you removed.
Is there a roll back timing light on a crane Hi 4?
A friends early Sportster has that. If so, you can take a good roll back timing light like a snap-on MT241 and check the advance curve and for spark scatter. Did changing the mid & hi range jets /needle have any affect at all?

Is there a trade in program for Crane Hi 4 ignitions?
Another note, daytona twin tech used to have a trade in program for the old hi-4 ignitions. It saved you about $70 of a new module.
