Should I replace cam bearings with new cam?
No, you don’t need to change cam bearings when you install a new cam. So long as the old bearings aren’t screwed up because of oil starvation or something like that. Plus, you just about have to have the motor out and torn all the way down to install the new bearings anyway.
Are all cam bearings the same size?
Depending on the engine, the cam bearings may be “stepped” (different size for each cam bore) or they may feature the same bore size, front to rear. Remember, when installing cam bearings, always work your way from the rear of the block forward.
Are there camshaft bearing and oil pressure issues?
Gary Grey’s wife, however, got a bad block from Tom Wood in Indianapolis that did not have the cam bearing oil galleries drilled correctly and it ate the engine in 2500 miles,so it is not completely unheard of for there to be manufacturing problems with those late blocks. Have you put an aneroid gauge on it to tell you what the pressure really is?
Where can I get new camshaft bearing caps?
I stripped the engine all the way down. Took the block, main bearing caps, and cam to my local engine machine shop. For $160 I got the engine back. He cleaned it, honed the cylinders, and supplied, installed, and honed new cam bearings.
What are the bearings on a camshaft block?
Both of those blocks are claimed to be under 50,000 miles too. Anyway, as far as diagnosing cam bearings after just pullng the pan, it would only be from process of elimination. They may have checked all the main bearings and rod bearings with plasti-guage, and found them to be satisfactory.
When do cam bearings wear, they become loose?
When cam bearings wear, they become loose, not tight.:smilelol: I suspect you had something else wrong. Also, it is unlikely that cam bearings would wear and crank bearings not wear. Cam bearing wear is unlikely to say the least…and would not necesarily result in low oil pressure anyway.
Is it required to change cam bearing every Cam change?
And yes the the cam bearings are the first things to get oil from the pump. But if they are too tight or too loose it will have a major effect on oil pressure down the line to more critically loaded parts of your engine such as the main bearings. Last edited by TWR2003; 06-20-2008 at 02:12 PM .
