What should the oil temp be on a Harley Davidson?
One of my bikes is a 2002 FLHT, all bore 107″ built motor (124TQ/110HP). I run a Jagg low mount 10 row oil cooler and even now, in the mid 90s, oil temp rarely sees 220*. Your oil temps may see 230* or even 250* but that would not change your oil pressure which is not a function of the oil temperature.

Cut the trip short and returned home to check the oil and it being hot checked the manual where it should read on the stick and sure enough just a bit under the full mark for hot conditions. I think I read that Harley says the standard operating temp for a big twin is 230 degress. I have a 95″ with some head work and cams…. The hottest I have had mine is 224. You could certainly drop that 10 to 15 degrees by going to synthetic lube in place of the motor oil. The synthetic will reduce friction which is what causes the heat. I am assuming that you change your oil and filter as recommended.

An operating temp of 200- 210 degrees will extend the life of any V twin engine. If aircraft engines ran as hot as Harleys the FAA. would ground them. I still ride an ironhead sporty. That’s why 60 weight oil gets used during summer and 20-50 gets used when it’s cold.
