Where are the timing marks on a YZ250F?
Timing marks must be spot on at the crank and the cam sprockets, when the cam chain tensioner is ingaged. Alright, thanks. This is new to me, so how would I go about re-setting the timing? Is a timing light needed? I will read up on it in the manual as well. Remove the cam chain tensioner per the manual. Get the crank at TDC per the marks.
How to check stock timing on YZ ignition?
Rotate flywheel clockwise till indicator reads .007″, that should be stock timing, check timing marks on flywheel to stator plate. Loosen 3 screws and line up mark on stator plate to flywheel. Even if your bikes timing is fully retarded it wont feel like a 125, to far advanced and it will likely detonate.
How to check the valves on a 2009 YZ250F?
So I’m checking the valves on my 2009 YZ250F today. Everything was going smoothly until I went to set everything at TDC. I lined up the dots on the cam sprockets level with the head and made sure the cams were pointing out.
Is the ignition on my YZ 250 off?
After a complete rebuild I believe my ignition timing is off on my 2011 YZ 250. I marked the stator on the edges of where the bolts were to make sure I got it back in the right place. After some riding time the bike just feels gutless on the bottom end.

What’s the best way to adjust cylinder timing?
Community Answer. Set the first cylinder to top dead center on the compression stroke. Set the distributor to fire at the top (this is considered 0 degrees advance/retarded). If you want to advance/retard timing, turn the crank an angle amount equal to what you want, or place a timing tape and use a timing light.
How to set spark plug on YZ ignition?
You can cut threads down on spark plug to get less hieght, or cut and drill a hole in a piece of steel to mount to head stud, then Buy magnetic base to hold indicator, you should have some type of set screw to hold indicator from moving, once that is done find tdc and set indicator to 0.
How do you set ignition timing with no timing marks?
Rotate the engine very slowly back and forth until the screwdriver is at the maximum height. This indicates the number one cylinder is at Top Dead Center or “TDC” on the compression stroke. Locate the number one spark plug wire on distributor cap and make a tic-mark of this position with a marker pen on the distributor housing.

This indicates the number one cylinder is at Top Dead Center or “TDC” on the compression stroke. Locate the number one spark plug wire on distributor cap and make a tic-mark of this position with a marker pen on the distributor housing. Remove the distributor cap and observe the position of the rotor.
How do you change the ignition timing on a V-block?
Remove all the spark plugs using the spark plug wrench. The engine will be easier to turn by hand with the spark plugs removed and it’s a good time to replace them if required. Remove the valve cover from over the number one cylinder. On a V-block engine this is normally the valve cover on the driver’s side.
What should cam caps torque be on YZ250F?
Install the cam caps torque to 10 nm this is very important. release the cam tensioner and everything should be correct. Rotate the crank with a wrench several times to verify everything is correct. You should be turning the crank counter-clockwise. This is the normal rotation of engine, and it will put the slack in the chain on the tensioner side.
How often should you change the timing chain on a Yamaha?
The answer is no, but if you are a high revving, faster intermediate/pro type of rider, changing a timing chain every 20 hours is not uncommon. Follow your owners manual for regular scheduled maintenance, but just know that those maintenance schedules that Yamaha “suggests” aren’t based on every type of rider.
How to check cam timing with the engine at TDC?
Rotate the engine slowly and carefully two revolutions (will be one revolution of the cames) and re-check the cam timing with the engine at TDC Do it again if you want to be 110% sure (I always do). Thank you very much! I will do this and go from there. I cannot get the 3 dots to line up with the head now when the crank is at TDC.
