How can clutch friction be increased?
Generally, that means one with a longer lever, or one with a shorter distance between the cable pull and the pivot point. In doing so, you increase the size of the friction zone, and reduce the effort required to pull the clutch.
Is friction zone bad for clutch?
Riding your clutch in the friction zone on a motorcycle with a wet clutch will not cause damage. Riding the clutch is useful to keep the bike from stalling at walking speeds or to control power delivery in slippery conditions like mud. A dry clutch will generate more heat and wear faster.
Can you adjust friction zone?
“Yes, you can adjust the free play – that will change where the clutch engages relatively to lever travel. Release the clutch cable housing back to its natural position, put the bike in first, and see if you like your new friction zone. Repeat this process until you get to the spot where you want it.
How do you increase friction zone?
There is a thumbwheel adjustment at the end of the clutch lever, and another adjuster at the other end of the clutch cable down where it attaches to the engine/transmission casing. Alternatively, draining all of your oil and riding will likely increase your friction zone.
What is the clutch friction zone?
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) defines the friction zone as “the area of clutch lever movement that begins where the clutch starts to transmit power to the rear wheel and ends just prior to full clutch engagement.”
Do all bikes have a friction zone?
The friction zone is the area of engagement of the engine and rear tire while letting the lever out away from the handlebar. Every bike is different and even two of the same year/make/model will be different where the clutch engages – which is why I emphasized don’t visually memorize it.
How does the clutch adjustment work on a car?
At the clutch pack: The adjustment of the nut in the clutch pack alters where the friction zone ends up on the lever on the bars, i.e., clutch lever engages close to the hand grip or almost all the way released from the hand grip. The clutch adjuster screw adjusts the point at which the cable begins to pull the clutch out of engagement.
When does the friction zone start on a motorcycle?
It’s very easy to adjust. Friction zone will normally start about 1/4 or 1/2 way through the clutch travel. Like someone said above, you do have to be careful that there is some free play in the clutch lever. If the cable is too tight, the clutch will always be a little disengaged, which will wear out the clutch.
How do you stay in the friction zone?
If you have adjustable levers, you can bring it in closer to the grip. The real trick is to practice until you are able to get to then stay in the friction zone as long as you need or want to.
What happens if you turn the clutch too far clockwise?
If the adjustment screw is turned too far clockwise, the clutch will be disengaged or slip no matter what position the cable is in. If the adjustment screw is too far counterclockwise, the clutch will drag because you cannot, regardless of how much slack you remove at the lever, disengage it enough to remove the contact.

What should the clutch spacing be on a Harley Davidson?
Too much slack and clutch may drag / too tight and clutch may slip. If free play between end of cable ferrule and clutch lever bracket is more than 1/8″ at the handlebar, clutch may not fully disengage. Most Harley Davidson lever positions are set at about 1/8″ of clutch lever spacing.
What should I do if my HD clutch drags?
If the adjustment screw is too far counterclockwise, the clutch will drag because you cannot, regardless of how much slack you remove at the lever, disengage it enough to remove the contact. The service manual recommends 1/2 to 1 counter clockwise turn after turning the adjuster screw clockwise to lightly seat the screw.
