Can a stator be removed from a Harley Davidson?

Mike demonstrates Harley Davidson stator and rotor removal so we can replace it with a 50 amp upgrade. Follow along. There are plenty of tips along the way. Did you test your system?

How to replace the rotor shell on a Harley Davidson?

This three-part video series walks us through Harley Davidson charging system replacement. Bob LaRosa shows us how to replace the Harley stator and rotor shell.

How long does it take to change a stator?

I bet a good tech can do a stator change in less then 3 hours and a belt change would take 6 or 7 hours. If your belt has been properly maintained it should go over a 100,000 easily. To replace the drive belt is more then you are thinking. To change the stator you can cheat a bit sometimes and not take the clutch out.

How do you replace an alternator on a Harley Davidson?

Remove all mounting bolts from the primary cover and slide the cover from its locating studs. Loosen the primary chain tensioner and inspect it for wear (this is a logical time to replace the tensioner shoe, since you are in the case).

What should I know about a Harley Davidson stator replacement?

The Harley Davidson stator replacement and upgrade is being done with quality parts made in the USA. The unique design of Cycle Electric Inc. stators offer: Insulation able to withstand temperatures of 600° F to eliminate stator burn out. Better low speed output to reduce battery discharge at an idle.

When to know if your stator regulator is bad?

If the battery was good under load test, if the stator is NOT shorted to ground, and the stator is putting out A/C voltage, then the regulator is bad (most likely even if if passed step 2). Check your owners/service manual for the system amp output for your bike.

How do you test a Harley Davidson voltage regulator?

To check the regulator unplug it from the stator. Take a test light and clip it to the negative terminal of the battery and then touch first one pin and then the other on the plug that goes to the regulator. If you get even the slightest amount of light from the test light the regulator is toast.

What should the charging voltage be on a Harley stator?

You can use 13 as a good all around battery voltage. That is a good healthy battery staying charged just above 12 volts. Example only: Let’s say the stator is rated for 10 amps x 13-volt battery: 10 x 13=130 watt charging system. So you have a 130-watt charging system in this example.

Why do I need to replace my stator on my Softail?

A short circuit or a sudden spike in electrical current caused by a failed voltage regulator can damage the tightly wound copper coils that surround the stator, reducing its ability to power the charging system. To replace the stator, the Softail’s primary drive system must be partially…
