Why does my Harley Davidson make a ticking noise?
If you are hearing an engine noise, chances are it is emanating from the valvetrain. If your are hearing an abnormal clattering or ticking noise, chances are it is a lifter. The twin cam engine uses hydraulic lifters, which are able to compensate for heat expansion and normal valvetrain wear.

Water jackets will hide a lot of that noise. The engines will be better but part of the ‘heart and sole’ will be gone. In the mean time, if we want quiet smooth rides we need to switch to competition’s machines, those ones that try so hard to imitate the real deal.

When all this didn’t stop noise Harley finally said they would send a new engine. Will be 10 weeks on Thursday. Back from a 1200 mile road trip to VA in late June. Noise was unbelievable when the engine got really hot. This is NOT Pinging my friends, this noise is coming from the oil cooler area.
Going down the highway or just pulling out, the noise sounds like metal marbles from somewhere in and around the front cylinder. I had it back to the dealer for this and they could not duplicate the sounds. The bike is a 2012 FLHTK 103 Motor. Any suggestions or has anyone had any of the same issues?

Even Replacement motors have been bad for early Piston slap and lack of compression early-on for using THE one size fits all for their application.. If you want it to sound Tight and Not rattle right away (slap),, it needs to be torque bored Right an Tight to the specks given for the piston to fit their bore.
Is the Harley Davidson 103ci hot or noisy?
Its a air cooled HD motor, Its suppose to be hot and when you sit on the motor its going to be noisy. My 06,08, and 2012 all sound the same.

A lifter may be bleeding down when the m/c is not running. The sound goes away when the motor rebuilds oil pressure in the lifter. If there was carbon build up on your valves, the ticking usually lingers even after the m/c is @ running temp. Have more questions? Assuming the oil pressure measures within spec, a lifter can become stuck and cause a ticking noise at all times. Why is my M8 bike making engine noise?
The first, a ‘Standard’ with a 107 engine, was repurchased by HD due to an engine noise that was seemingly non-repairable. Dealer had the bike for over 40 days and HD couldn’t tell the dealer ‘what’ or ‘how’ to fix the noise problem, so I simply enacted our State’s Lemon Law and had HD replace the bike.
