Is the DT466 truck getting hard to start?
I have had a small problem with it before, usually first thing in the AM. But now it doesn’t want to start no matter what time of the day it is. If its been sitting for any length of time it cranks and will finally start after about 45 seconds. There is nothing else wrong with this truck, this is the only problem it is giving me now.
Why does my 466 pump have a hard time starting?
You probably have a leak on your high pressure oil rail. More than likely, needs a new o-ring set. The 466 uses oil to hydraulicly actuate your injectors. Once the o-rings start to leak, the high pressure pump has a hard time building pressure to actuate the injectors. Sometimes it takes 30 seconds to finally build enough pressure to start.
What to do when your truck won’t start?
Though the grid appeared fine I isolated the problem by running the truck through 4-6 cycles of the wait to start procedure depending on the temp. When very cold 6 cycles and the truck fired right up, ran weak for a few minutes or so till it warmed up, but started.
Why is my tow truck getting hard to start?
After getting it to start it has no power, it has to warm up again now before you can move it. And this was just to move it from one side of my driveway to the other. I read another post about the tach….it doesn’t move until the truck almost starts. The oil pressure gauge doesn’t move until after it starts.
Why is the DT466 electronic diesel engine no more?
The DT466 Electronic Diesel Engine. The DT466E International diesel is no more mainly because it could not meet emission standards. It’s one engine that performed only as good as the oil pressure that supplied the HEUI (hydraulic electronic unit injectors).
Where is the cam sensor on a DT466?
The cam sensor is located on the passenger side of the front timing cover and reads engine rotation that relays a reading to the ECM (engine control unit). As I stated before if the cam sensor does not send a signal to the ECM the engine dies since the ECM thinks that the engine is not rotating and it’s programmed to shut down the injection system.
What makes a 2003 International 4300 sputter and Miss?
I have a 2003 International 4300 with a DT466. I just had all the O-rings on the injectors replaced along with the wiring harness that goes to the injectors. Now once the truck gets up to running temp it starts to sputter/miss. Truck runs GREAT cold but once warm gets worse.
Why does my DT466 diesel truck start smoking?
The truck will crank and accelerate great, then it begins smoking and goes into a limp mode with little pedal reaction. If you raise the rpm’s the smoke goes from whitish grey to dark almost black, but only when you raise the rpm’s.
Why does my DT466 start warm / hot?
The FACT that it starts good warm/hot MEANS that you DO NOT have a problem with the HPOP, IPR valve or other HEUI mechanical components because if you did, it would not start HOT very well. THEN re-install the good batteries and try it. On the cheap and quick, use a charger to boost voltage during cranking set to 12V Med or LESS.
What should off hand rpm be on DT466?
If it cranks don’t rev it unless you have a gauge to handle about 3000psi. Off hand should take close to 600psi to start. also you can pull the valve cover and apply shop air pressure into the rail and look for air bypassing the injectors.
What should fuel psi be on dt466e International diesel?
Usually when we get no start cold but fires and runs after using ether it might be injectors, but you need to do the fuel checks I posted and let me know. If you don’t have a fuel psi gauge, autozone loans them out. I like to have around 60psi I have seen them run ok above 45psi.
Why is my diesel engine hard to start?
The problems that can occur due to the cold weather are well-known and fairly common, such as using summer-grade fuel in winter, a bad glow plug system, slow cranking, or thick, cold oil. However, in summer the problems tend to be quite different. Here are a few different issues to consider if your diesel is a hard start.
How long does it take to start a 05 dt466e bus?
I have 11 05 DT466E buses in my fleet. Out of the 11, only 4 like to start. The rest have extended cranking times. sometimes it takes up to 45 seconds of cranking to get them started, and the cold only makes it worse.
Why is my DT 466E engine not working?
The bus in question was a 1998 International conventional with a DT 466E diesel engine. It was the middle of winter so the cold temperature was a contributing factor with the no start situation. We went out to have a look and could not get it going so the next step was to tow it in and have a closer look.
What are the crank times on a 2005 DT466?
We have 2 of the 2005-2006 DT466s, when cold, long cranking times then an unnerving high speed rev up and black smoke till they settle down are the norm. They are one of the reasons we switched to 5W-40 motor oil, both to make me feel better about the cold high speed rev up and to help with the cold cranking speed.
How often does a DT466 give up the ghost?
The only difference betwene the two is how light your pocket will be. If its not the issue youre only out 25 or 30 bucks. Had mine go a couple times they usualy give up the ghost every 50,000 to 100,000 as long as you dont run too hot and driving conditions.
What do the 0-rings on a DT466 mean?
Looks like you need a set of injector 0-rings. those codes refer to loss of injection pressure. The long rail on the side of the head is the High pressure rail for the injectors. If you have a gauge that goes up to 1000psi or better you can tap into the pressure sensor port and check cranking pressure.
Are there any issues with the 2000 dt466e?
Walkerv thanks for the heads up on the injectors. It’s not noticeable on cold start. It runs perfect thru all rpms until it gets to 180. TVA it starts fine either way. I was running it last night to get it to temperature, it seems to idle ok after 180 degrees.
Where is the fuel pump on a DT-466?
JaymZH2 wrote: fuel pump would be my guess. not sure on the older ones, but the newer DT’s it is on the drivers side mid block towards the front. a couple bolts a 2 lines and your done. I have a 2000 4700 DT-466, would what you call the fuel pump be the same thing they call the “high pressure pump” in the book that the lines from the filter go to??
