Is the 1997 Polaris Sportsman 500 losing power?
2 Answers My 1997 Polaris Sportsman 500 has a loss of power when driving. It starts up just fine and runs smooth but there is only about half the power it had the week before. It does not back fire. When climbing a hill or on flat ground it reaches a certain power level and that’s all.

Start at the battery and work your way to the fuses with a volt meter when it reads no juice you back up one and this should be the issue. Main fuse blows=no power. The cams in the 425s and 500s of that era had a problem with the oil journals in them. The result was excessive wear to the lobes. I have replaced many of these cams, and the new design has extra oil journals and they are larger.

I pulled my fuel line to the carb and started it, when I gave it throttle it pumped more gas so I know it has gas to the carb. It seemed to run the same with the line pulled, until the remaining gas in the carb ran out. That makes me think it’s a fuel issue with the carb.
