What causes a scored piston?
Scoring usually occurs when one or more piston rings fail and the minor level of movement is allowed between the piston and valve wall. It’s likely all of the piston rings are damaged and improper lubrication is present.
Why do Pistons need to be replaced?
The original pistons may have worn or damaged ring grooves, wrist pins or skirts, or they may have cracks. New pistons may also be necessary if the cylinders have too much taper wear and the block has to be bored to oversize.

What can a piston examination tell us about an engine?
1 | Page Piston Diagnosis. The process of examining used pistons can tell us a lot of helpful information on the condition of an engine. When engine failure does occur the pi examination of it frequently helps us trace the sourc caused the failure.
What causes damage to the Crown of a piston?
Symptom – The piston crown and cylinder head show signs of damage where material has been crushed between the two surfaces after entering the combustion chamber. Cause – Most common causes are broken bearings in the big or small end of the con rod, broken rings and dislodged ring centering pins.
Why does a piston crack on the down stroke?
Reason – Coolant is drawn into the combustion chamber on the down-stroke of the piston. When the coolant hits the piston crown the change in temperature makes the aluminium brittle and it eventually cracks. In extreme cases a leaking head gasket can cause erosion at the top edge of the cylinder and the corresponding area of the head.
When to reuse pistons or order new ones?
If either the piston or the top ring exhibit evidence of micro-welding, the only solution is a new set of pistons and rings. Avoiding a re-occurrence of this issue involves careful initial ring break-in that allows establishing early wear patterns that remove the tallest peaks early before maximum cylinder pressure is applied.
How can you tell if a used piston is still working?
One of the first things to check on a used piston is that the ring groove clearance is still within spec. Install the ring in the groove and use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance. Beyond worn ring grooves, high output engines and especially supercharged or turbocharged engines tend to load the top ring with far more cylinder pressure.
Which is the best way to install Pistons?
This brief video shows you how to correctly install pistons into a sleeve without using excessive force! For people not familiar with this type of piston-ring compressor, it is a tapered sleeve manufactured by wiseco. The cylinders, ring lands and compressor are lubricated with a mineral oil. Loading…
