When did the BMW front forks get fixed?
This was fixed by BMW in 1972. You need to replace the one piece bushing with the three-piece bushing setup. Rather than do something like Clymers books have done, which is to just show sketches for every forks model, I decided to select one popular type, & expand upon its internals & its operation.
What’s the correct torque wrench for BMW front forks?
I suggest you fill the fork with the proper amount of oil BEFORE the plug is installed …the center hole is small. Be sure to use fresh gaskets, which are number 07119963073. You are going to be holding the nut, and tightening the center threaded plug, so the torque wrench is used C-CW. Top nut: 40 foot pounds.
How big is the nut on a BMW front fork?
NO counter-torque (anti-torque) method is needed on these (ONLY!) types of forks when tightening at the center. The nut is 41 mm. To remove: HOLD the 41 mm nut. Turn the 17 mm internal hex CLOCKWISE to loosen …not CCW. Loosen approximately 1/2 turn.
What kind of ring does a BMW front fork use?
Instead a thick Teflon ring was used, which fit tighter & was quieter. The upper face of the valve body was machined to fit the thicker ring, & movement was thereby restricted, between bump and rebound, giving more bump damping.

What kind of wrench do I need for BMW front forks?
There is a dogbone wrench available with a 41 mm flat end, instead of the more commonly seen 36 mm flat end…see https://bmwmotorcycletech.info/tools.htm . You could use an adjustable wrench too. Hold the central nut with either of those tools, and rotate the center threaded plug CW, to loosen it.
