What makes the primary noise on a Harley Davidson?

When i finally got the grey matter clicking this morning: I put Lisa’s bike on the jack to find the cause of that noise coming from the primary side. The fluid level was perfect. The primary chain felt kinda sloppy. So I pulled the spark plugs and put the trans in 5th gear to roll the engine over.

What to do if your primary makes noise?

Try looking in self help tips transmission, clutch, primary (drive train) tip #43 “automatic chain tensioner adjustment”. Basically three rapid accel/decells in rapid succession, this got rid of the noise in my primary on my 2010 Limited. Good Luck !

Why is my primary chain making a noise?

Do this 2-3 times in succession and you’ll notice that the noise that you thought was the valve train is almost completely gone now. Low speed riding is a bit smoother also due to less play in the chain. By doing this, the automatic primary chain will ratchet up a bit tighter if it was loose before this.

Why does my primary make a rattling noise?

They took the bike in, disassembled the primary and did not find anything wrong. After putting it back together, the noise was still there. They took it apart again, compensator, clutch, everything and called HD Tech Support with spring measurements and whatever other info the dealer provided.

Is there a problem with the spur gear on a Harley Davidson?

I’m told that Harley Davidson has know about this problem since before it’s introduction and refuses to change the spur gear for a helical gear which should reduce or eliminate the noise.

Do you need a six speed transmission on a Harley Davidson?

The six speeds are geared tall for highway riding and they are close ratio and you really need to work the shifter, not just lug the bike around. (You must log in or sign up to reply here.)

Are there opinions about the noise of your transmission in 5th gear?

Yes, there are a bunch of opinions about the noise of your transmission in 5th gear. HD has manufactured a part called IDS. Stock on 2008s. You can retrofit your bike. Search this forum and you will see numerous comments about the IDS.

What causes transmission problems on a Harley Davidson?

Transmission problems will often manifest as difficulty changing gears whilst underway. Causes can include a bent shift fork, bad bearing on the transmission input or output shaft, or other worn parts. A bad/bent shift fork no longer move the gears the correct distance, which prevents complete engagement of the next gear set.
