Which is the fastest gear on my bike?
I am running a 46×16 on 27.25 wheels on my single speed, resulting in 77.6 gear inches and 13.9 mph at 60rpm, to 20.8mph should I achieve 90rpm. 77.6 is a large gear where I live with hills, but where I plan on riding, mostly flat, should be Ok. (not my primary ride) Thanks for contributing an answer to Bicycles Stack Exchange!
Which is the lowest gear on a bicycle?
On your shift lever, the lowest number, No. 1, represents first gear. Positioning your gear lever to 1 moves your drive chain to the largest sprocket on the rear cassette. First gear is the lowest gear and the easiest for climbing hills.
Do you need lower gears on a Brompton Bike?
Assuming the use of the industry-standard 700C wheels – a smaller diameter wheel will reduce gearing accordingly, and users of small-wheel cycles such as a Brompton or Moulton will find it harder to achieve a really high top gear – you simply need a larger sprocket on the back wheel than the smallest chainring on the chainset.
When do you know your bike has low gearing?
Exactly what counts as low gearing depends on the rider’s personal circumstances and requirements, but a good indicator is that it should feel too low at the start of a ride, even on the steepest gradient likely to be encountered.

What happens when you use too low a gear on a bike?
Continuing with the car example, using too low a gear at high speed would result in high fuel consumption. The same is true of your body pedalling a bike. So, quite simply, more gears means more scope to find your preferred pedalling speed.
What does it mean when a bike has 30 gears?
A bike with 30 or more gears is not an indication of a machine designed to break the land speed record any more than a bike with only a single gear, assuming similar ratios. It’s about efficiency and having a much broader range, or choice, of gears for a given situation.
Which is the smallest chainring on a bike?
The chain is in the small chainring (least resistance) and smallest cassette cog (most resistance). The also may cause your chain to slip, not shift properly, and will stretch and damage the bike chain over time. Front gear = smallest chainring Back gear = smallest sprocket
