Is there a problem with my 2004 Polaris Sportsman 500?
If you own a 2004 Sportsman 500 (only the 500 models have the problem) you will have gas leaking into the oil everytime you shut it off. I have talked to my dealer about it and Polaris is aware of this issue.

2004.5 Sportsman 500 HO Problem!!!!!!! Well, I replaced the battery Sunday. I took it out for a good hour. Everything was running great. So I went out tonight, and tried starting it, the motor wont turn over. It sounds like only the starter is turning over. I checked all connections, and they were good. Lights and all are working great.
What should battery voltage be on Polaris Sportsman 500?
If the engine runs irregularly, stalls or misfires, it is possible that there are dirty or defective spark plugs, which must be inspected, cleaned or replaced accordingly. It is also possible that there is low battery voltage. The 2011 Scrambler 500 battery must be charged to 12.8 VDC.
Why is my sportsman 500 engine overheating?
If the Sportsman 500 engine is overheating, it may be that there is debris stuck in the screen. The debris must be removed prior to further operation. It is also possible that the radiator is plugged.

What was the problem with the Sportsman 500 Ho?
Some of the 04’s (mine) had factory problems with one of the wires going to the distributor. At that plant they ran it in the wrong place and it got kinked. Mine went through 3 batteries before they figured it out.
When did Polaris change the ignition on the Sportsman?
The AC powered ignition was the Achilles’ Heel of an otherwise stone reliable ATV. Eventually, in mid-2004, Polaris updated the ignition to a DC powered ignition which pretty much eliminated ignition failures. But that left a huge number of 2002 to early-2004 models that were doomed to fail, often at a very inopportune time.
