Where can I get a fuel sender reconditioned?
There are shops that do this and egid gave you a couple of hints on how to find one, but your local mechanic can probably recondition your fuel sender about as well as any of the specialty shops, as long as they’re not squeamish about opening up the unit (and as long as the unit can be opened up – I’m not sure about the TB20 senders).
When to replace the fuel sender unit in a car?
Eventually holes may develop. This is not uncommon in older cars, where a series of small pinholes barely visible to the naked eye cause a slow, steady loss of fuel. If a tank is old and leaky, replace it, not only because of the needless loss of fuel but also because of the risk of fire.
Can a fuel gauge be modified to fit a sender?
Note that senders are not usually “plug and play” units. The length of the sender arm may have to be modified to fit the dimensions of your fuel tank. This also ensures that the gauge reads properly. First measure tank depth from the top of the tank, near the sending unit, to the bottom.
How do you install a new Sender in a gas tank?
Install the new sender by lowering the float and float arm into the tank. Be sure to slide a new gasket into place under the flange, then align the gasket with the holes in the sender and in the tank. When the gasket is aligned, mark it in relation to the flange, as it may turn while you are centering the screw holes to match the tank holes.
Can a fuel sender be removed from a tank?
Unfortunately, if you do need to replace the sending unit, they are usually only accessible from the top of the tank. This means the tank needs to be removed to gain access — or at least lowered away from the body. However, once it is removed, testing the sending unit is easy. All you will need is a multimeter set to ohms, and that’s it.

What to do if your fuel sender unit is half full?
Disconnect the fuel-gauge wire from the sender unit and scratch its bare end against the tank, or any other bare metal on the chassis or bodywork, to earth it. If the gauge needle swings to ‘full’ although the tank is half-full, there is no electrical fault, but there may be a mechanical fault in the sender unit, such as a detached float .
How do you install a fuel sending unit?
Install your new fuel sending unit by first placing the new tank seal in place. Lower the new unit into the tank, being certain that if there are any wires or hoses in the tank, the movable float arm remains clear of interference. Install the lock ring, and do not overtighten it.
