Can a hydraulic chain tensioner be installed on a Twin Cam 88?
Cam Chain Tensioners on Twin Cam 88 My son just purchased a 2003 Road King we want to upgrade the chain tensioners to the hydraulic ones. How much does it cost to replace a cam chain tensioner?
Same procedure for the cam install; freeze the cams with bearings installed, heat the plate, make sure the timing dots are aligned and drop the cams into the plate; a piece of cake. Or, take the plate with cams and the new tensioner assembly to a local dealer or indy and pop for $20-$25 for them to install the new inner tensioner.
Are there any problems with the Harley Davidson cam chain tensioners?
Harley, of course, made a fairly expensive upgrade including a new oil pump and hydraulic cam chain tensioners run by the engine oil and re-designed shoes. They also went to a new style chain. The new design is very reliable and as of like 2009 I haven’t heard of any problems with them.

When do Harley Davidson twin cam chain tensioners wear out?
They also used, and I can’ remember the technical name of the chain, an older chain design. Indeed the cam chain shoes would wear out partly because of the shoe and partly because of the chain. Harley recommended getting them checked between 35 and 40K miles. Problem is they could give out ANY time and were not covered under warranty.
How many miles on cam chain tensioner shoes?
I’ve got 36,000 miles on my 2008 Electra Glide and I don’t have a good place to set up the bike to check the shoes as you describe in your video. Do you consider 36,000 miles a lot for this chain tensioner system? 36,000 is not a lot of miles for hydraulic cam chain tensioners.
Is the Softail Night Train a cam chain tensioner bike?
One of my sons has my last bike, an ’04 Softail Night Train, now, but he lives in California, so I do the maintenance on all of the other bikes, thanks to the confidence gained from your videos, and having all of the Harley repair manuals for each of these bikes. Are there Cam tensioners on a 2001 Harley Davidson?
Yes, these have prematurely wore out on some bikes of the ’99-’06 vintage. Food for thought. The SE hydraulic cam plate would be nice. But I have chosen, both in my old Superglide, and my “new” 2001 FXDX, to service the stock tensioners with OEM. Last edited by Big D; 07-03-2017, 07:26 PM . 2001 FXDX Superglide Sport.
