What should the ohms resistance be on a Harley Davidson ignition coil?
The specified ohms resistance for the primary of a 2000 carbureted Softail will not be the same as the primary of a 2005 Ultra. Therefore, it is important to use the correct electrical manual for your ride. When testing your Harley Davidson ignition coil you will be testing ohms resistance.
What are the ohms on a Harley Davidson?
There are many different ohm measurements in a Harley’s electrical system. What are you testing? For Evolution® and Shovelhead® applications, ballast resistance is used to limit coil current. In these systems, the resistance of the coil primary windings serves as the ballast resistor.
Where is the pickup coil on a Harley Davidson?
The alternator has permanent internal magnets, external trigger projections located on its circumference, and a pickup coil mounted on the crankcase at the side of the alternator rotor. The pickup coil is adjustable for both air gap and ignition timing.
How many ohms does a Twin Cam 88 Coil have?
In these systems, the resistance of the coil primary windings serves as the ballast resistor. Primary resistance is typically 3 ohms. Newer Twin Cam 88® applications use a coil with very low (about .5 ohm) primary resistance. Coil current is limited electronically within the module by restricting the charging time. I was looking for a coil.

How does the coil work on a Harley Davidson?
The coil consists of two winding’s of wire, the primary and the secondary. The primary receives 12 volts from the motorcycle and allows voltage to build; transferring voltage to the secondary winding where voltage is increased to thousands of volts and released through the spark plug wires to the spark plug.
How do you change the ohmmeter on a motorcycle?
Turn off the motorcycle. Allow the engine to become cool to the touch before proceeding. Disconnect, by hand, the two spark plug wires from the coil. Unscrew the smaller connections on the coil with an SAE wrench. Set the ohmmeter to read resistance on the “Rx1” setting. Measure the resistance across the two smaller terminals on the coil.
How to test a V-twin coil and ohms?
Hook one side to pos battery cable and the other to a ground.Go to pos side of coil,it lights red if power is there.Go to negative side of coil it will flash on and off green, if you have your switching signal.Sorry if I mislead anyone.

What should coil resistance be on a motorcycle?
IMHO Coils tend to be a work / don’t work propostion with very few exceptions. As far as readings, VERY generally I’ve found coils intended for Points & Condensor systems read about 3.0/4.0 ohms and ones intended for use with Electronic Ignitions read about 1.0/2.0 ohms.
What should coil resistance be on Clymer spark plugs?
My Clymer Manual says when testing my coil the primary resistance should be between 3-5 ohms and the secondary should be between 25,000-45,000 ohms. My confusion with it is the Manual says in Step 1: “Disconnect all ignition coil wires (including the spark plug leads) before testing.” Than it says to test the primary circuit.
How do you turn off ignition coil on motorcycle?
Turn off the motorcycle ignition. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the coil by hand. Disconnect the two smaller primary wires from the coil using an open-ended wrench. Measure the resistance between the coil connections for the spark plugs with an ohmmeter.
What should the resistance be on a motorcycle ignition coil?
Your result should be very low around 0.5 to 1.5 Ohms. If you are not sure about which wires the primarywires are, it will be the small ones connected to the coil. Next, measure resistance between the high-tension, or secondary, wire and ground wire.
How to test the spark on a motorcycle coil?
1 Check for a spark. Place your voltmeter to ohms. 2 Ohms setting on volt meter. Remove the wires from the coil. 3 Remove wires from coil. Use your volt meter to touch the power wire and the trigger wire. 4 Volt meter leads on trigger and power wire. 5 Volt meter leads on power and spark plug wire. 6 Check volt meter.
Where is the ignition coil on a moped?
There are some bikes where the ignition coil is located under the flywheel and those are mostly mopeds. Step 3) The plug cap is to be removed for the test, if it is not removed then it can make your test inaccurate.
