Do you need to change engine oil on a Vespa?
If you have a 4-stroke Vespa you’ll need to change the engine oil but if you have a 2-stroke Vespa, there is no engine oil as such, just two-stroke oil which is either added as a premix directly into the tank with the petrol or into a 2-stroke reservoir where it is injected into the engine.
What to do if your Vespa starter fails?
But in a pinch, this can save you from an expensive tow. Of course, you’ll want to drive the Vespa immediately to a place where either you or a Vespa service person can diagnose the cause of the electric starter failure. Please leave a comment if this has helped you, or if you have further insight to offer.
Where do you stand to kick start a Vespa?
Have the person who will be using the kick start level (we’ll call him the “kicker” for now) stand on the side of the Vespa with the kick start and the “helper” (that second person I mentioned) on the side with the throttle. Unlike using the electric starter, DO NOT grasp the brake handles.
Can a Vespa start if the battery is dead?
The manual does tell you that you can kickstart if the battery is dead but it doesn’t give you the important tip to use the throttle. You saved me a tow. Thanks! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! havent started in a yr, with lots of frustration this morning, i finally got it going after many attempts at kickstarting!

What kind of spark tester do I need for Piaggio moped?
All 50cc Piaggio and Gilera 2-stroke engines plus some geared 50cc (e.g. Derbi) which use the same ignition. It’s assumed you have and know how to work a multimeter! The best option is to use a spark tester which plugs into the spark plug lead (instead of the plug) and is clipped to an earth point on the moped engine.
Why does my Piaggio bike not have a spark?
If the spark is weak it’s perfectly possible for the spark to be strong enough to jump the 1mm spark plug gap out of the bike and appear good, but not to actually spark at all when the plug is fitted. Part of the reason for this is that a spark cannot travel so far in the compressed air atmosphere of the cylinder.
What should the spark plug look like on a Vespa?
Too black, you may be running rich, which will affect the ability for your engine to fully burn gas; too white, there is a chance that your engine is overheating. The plug should be a nice “chocolate brown” colour, and there should be a sharp, blue-white spark centered in the air gap.
Are there resistor plugs in a Vespa P200?
There has been a great debate over the use of resistor plugs in Vespa scoots. Generally, they are not a good idea since the NGK spark plug cap fitted in most p200s is already resistive, and the ignition on Vespas is pretty underpowered when compared to modern motorcycles.
What should the anode of a Vespa engine look like?
The anode should be square and the ceramic surrounding it should be light to chocolate brown. If your plug looks like this, your engine is probably pretty healthy and the timing is probably spot on. This is an example of a fouled plug.
What causes a Vespa P series engine to get dirty?
Usually this condition is caused by a bad ignition system (misfiring), Too much fuel (a rich condition), or a plug that is too cold. Eventually this condition will prohibit the sparkplug conducting spark and the engine will get dirty from left over deposits.
