-Farmr thanks to Farmr and the Frontier. I’ve had relatively good luck with my first model year 2002 Sportsman 700 twin and am very happy with it but after 5 1/2 years and over 3000 miles I can add a little to this topic, at least in reference to the earlier Twin models.
Are there any issues with the Polaris Sportsman?
But as with anything mechanical, there have been some issues that have come to the surface, and there was a run of Sportsman 600’s and 700’s from 2002 to mid-2004 that were plagued with electrical problems and failure of the ignition system was a matter of when, not if.
When did Polaris change the ignition on the Sportsman?
The AC powered ignition was the Achilles’ Heel of an otherwise stone reliable ATV. Eventually, in mid-2004, Polaris updated the ignition to a DC powered ignition which pretty much eliminated ignition failures. But that left a huge number of 2002 to early-2004 models that were doomed to fail, often at a very inopportune time.

What to do if your EFI machine is sputtering?
You can also (with the machine off), grab the coil and see if you can rotate it….if you can rotate it, then the ground, mount bolt is loose and needs to be tightened. In order to tighten, you need to remove the two bolts on the mount plate. They screw directly in to the frame.
